Climbing mountains can be a profound metaphor for life and the ups and downs we all face on our journey. These Health & Wellbeing talks and workshops are suitable for anyone within a company.
Since discovering the mountains back in 2008, I’ve also had a passion and interest in health – both physical and mental health. I’m a great believer that outdoor activities, like hiking in the mountains, can bring so many benefits to both our body and our mind.
Most people will probably recognise that such activities are good for us physically but perhaps won’t so readily recognise the mental health benefits and also how the mountains can be such a profound metaphor for life and the ups and downs that we all face.
Our health and wellbeing is vital to our happiness but also it affects all aspects of our lives, including at home and at work. If we were to take more time to understand, learn and focus on our health and wellbeing then our lives and the lives of those around us would be improved.
Through my own life experiences and relating these to the mountains, I have produced a series of talks and workshops that cover topics such as stress, anxiety, depression, confidence, appreciation, motivation and, ultimately, happiness.
Each talk and workshop covers different areas related to mountains and life, focusing on health and wellbeing. The topics are designed for anybody working within a company.
Talks & Workshops
Each topic is delivered as a talk or interactive workshop. Talks are 1.5 hours and workshops are 2.5 hours. Or alternatively as a full-day ‘All in one’ workshop. The choice is yours.
1- Preparation is key
With any hike or expedition you need to prepare before you set off. If you simply put on some hiking boots and started walking without any knowledge, information, equipment, etc then you would soon come unstuck in some way. The same goes for life and your health and wellbeing. You need to be prepared which means gaining knowledge, seeking advice, educating yourself, getting help when required, planning your moves, managing expectations, knowing what equipment to have and when to use it, what is the right food and drink for you and what do you have in your own personal toolbox!
Key Learning Objectives: 1) Understand yourself 2) Where to get the best help & advice 3) Create your own mental health toolbox
2 – Hike more, worry less
Modern life is stressful in so many ways and our anxiety levels are at an all time high. If not controlled and managed effectively stress can cause both physical and mental health problems. Anxiety can be crippling and prevent us living our lives fully. One of the best things you can do to reduce both stress and anxiety is to get outdoors and hike more. I will discuss and explain the physical and mental health benefits to exercise as well as providing various tools and techniques for you to reduce, manage and prevent stress and anxiety in your life and improve your health and happiness.
Key Learning Objectives: 1) The benefits of exercise 2) Recognise the effects of stress 3) Understand and reduce anxiety
3 – Surviving the storm
The weather in the mountains can be difficult to predict and can often change suddenly and there are times, like in life, where you can find yourself in the middle of a storm. It can be uncomfortable, precarious, worrying and even frightening but you have to get through it and survive. I discuss how you can survive the storm – that could be overcoming depression, dealing with big setbacks and the challenges that life can throw at us with the right techniques, tools and mindset. Building resilience, strength, confidence and with more knowledge you can and will survive any future storms you encounter.
Key Learning Objectives: 1) Recognise and understand depression 2) How to deal with setbacks and build resilience 3) Increase your confidence
4 – It’s not all about the summit
For people not experienced in the mountains it seems that their main focus is the mountain summits that they see up high and that is the main aim and objective and it is easy to get summit fever and ignore everything else. The same can go for life. Yet for those experienced (and wise) in the mountains, as in life, will tell you that the bigger element is the journey and it’s not all about the summit. What you see, what you learn, how you grow, the experiences on the way and how there will be times where it is not possible to summit and you have to accept that. Having a goal and a focus is great but it should never be the be all and end all. Knowing when to turn back, when to let go and realising the summit will always be there for another time is vital.
Key Learning Objectives: 1) When to let go and re-assess goals 2) Understand your priorities 3) How to reflect & learn effectively
5 – The best views come after the hardest climb
If life was easy and there were no challenges then you wouldn’t appreciate the good stuff when it happens and the same goes with climbing a mountain. If it was easy then the rewards would be less fulfilling, whereas, if you have pushed yourself, challenged yourself, struggled at times and maybe even doubted you could do it, then the joys and sense of achievement when you do succeed are so much more. The saying ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ is true and having some setbacks, adversity and difficult challenges to face can make life more fulfilling and rewarding as well as more interesting – so embrace the hard climb as it will be worth it!
Key Learning Objectives: 1) The importance of purpose and fulfilment 2) How adversity builds strength & confidence 3) Recognise & appreciate your achievements
6 – What is your Everest?
Everest is the highest mountain on the planet and is often seen as the ultimate goal for those who have an interest in the mountains. Having hopes, dreams, goals, ambition and passion is an important element in life – you need these for motivation, enthusiasm, having a purpose, being positive and to help you through tough times – so we will discuss your ultimate goals, your biggest dreams and greatest ambitions. What is most important to you and why? What are your priorities? How can you work towards achieving your Everest and having a more fulfilled and happier life?
Key Learning Objectives: 1) Hopes, ambitions & goal setting 2) How to motivate yourself 3) Passion & enthusiasm are key to success
